THE OPPOSITION are English, from the southern suburbs of London. Mark Long, Marcus Bell and Ralph Hall seek through the colorless colors (black and white) the purity of the rates/rhythms which obsess you like the tick-tock of an alarm clock at the time of long sleepless nights! They came out with their first album of world exclusiveness at DISC' AZ on September 23, 1981. The originality of OPPOSITION lies in the marvelous mixture between the search for beautiful atmosphere and strong musical energy. Founded in 1979, OPPOSITION was initially pointed out by its first single "Very Little Glory" on the small DOUBLE VISION RECORDS label, which they had started for the circumstance. New Musical Express qualified the record as "a song recorded before its time". During the summer of 1980, a second single " This Year " came out by Ariola. OPPOSITION then decided to record the "Breaking The Silence" album which they produced themselves. Strongly allured by this original step and undertaking, DISC' AZ signed them in July 1981. A great French tour accompanied the release of the album as well as a Parisian concert.

On the level of inspiration, the music of the group reflects the environment of 80's England perfectly. The atmosphere which conveyed " Breaking The Silence " was dominated by the obsession of the 2nd World War. The Opposition affirmed their patronymic choice by refusing the contracts which the majors agitated under their nose. In the name of self-management, they assembled their own label Double Vision and with the complicity of sound engineer Kenny Jones, the group financed the recording of an album of a total dark, rare and tough intensity. One year later OPPOSITION recorded " Intimacy " in the Matrix studios of London. In France, the group got more and more fans allured by their new cocktail of reggae/new wave to crossroads of Font, Cure and U2. Charisma, the famous label finally co-opts " Intimacy " which comes out in England.

Two years later, in 1984 " Promises " appears on Charisma. First world output and first adventure in the United States. " Empire Days ", the fourth LP released in 1985 with its climatic vibrating " Five Minutes " & " First Suspect " is undoubtedly their most successful album. Three years later, Mark Long and Marcus Bell re-appear on Manhattan/EMI under the pseudoname SO. Their single " Are You Sure " reaches nr. 30 of the US charts and their clip is plebiscite voted as clip of the week by MTV. The singer/guitarist and the bass/keyboard player reform OPPOSITION in 1990 for the intimate " Blue Alice Blue " album recorded in the same spirit as the first LP with faithful producer/engineer Kenny Jones. The year 1994 announces the return of the OPPOSITION with the CD " War Begins At Home " produced by Marcus and mixed by Kenny Jones. Marking the sixth episode of the OPPOSITION's musical adventures.


Ils sont ANGLAIS - banlieue Sud de Londres -, JEUNES - avec un passé pourtant déjà bien rempli - et PLEIN D'AVENIR. Ils sortent leur premier 33t. en exclusivité mondiale chez DISC'AZ le 23 septembre 1981. Ils s'appellent "OPPOSITION". Opposition, créé en 1979, s'est vite fait remarquer par sa musique étrange et tortueuse, ses nappes sonores entrecoupées de déchirures, où flotte la voix du chanteur Mark Long. Ce trio composé également de Marcus Bell (basse et claviers) et de Ralph Hall (batterie) a choisi la France comme base de départ. C'était juste au virage des années 80, lorsque que les jeunes gens modernes ont soudain supplanté la punkitude ambiante en surfant sur leur new wave triomphante. Simple Minds et Cure ont déjà 4 LP à leur actif, Ultravox et ses synthés gelés chantent "Vienna" tandis que Police explose avec "Regatta De Blanc". La nouvelle vague déferle sur nos plages musicales avec les premiers LP de groupes inconnus comme "Closer" de Joy Division, "Boy" de U2... ou "Breaking The Silence" de The Opposition qui partagent le même sens tragique du spleen incandescent et de l'urgence. Des années punk agitées, ils en ont conservé ce sens inné de la révolte.

The Opposition affirme leur choix patronymique en refusant les contrats que les majors agitent sous leur nez. Au nom de l' auto-gestion, ils montent leur propre label Double Vision et avec la complicité d'un jeune chien fou ingénieur du son, Kenny Jones, le groupe finance l'enregistrement d'un album d'une totale intensité sombre, rare et tenace. The Opposition déchire notre silence hexagonal de son "Breaking The Silence". Du Gibus a Paris aux Transmusicales de Rennes en passant par des dizaines de villes et de villages avec leur rock en clair obscur, The Opposition se taille une légende franco-française comme avant eux tes Doits, le Velvet. Un on plus tard et toujours sur AZ sort "Intimacy" enregistré aux studios Matrix de Londres. En France, les tournées drainent de plus en plus de fans séduits par leur cocktail inédit de reggae/new wave à la croisée des chemins de Police, Cure et U2. Charisma, le famous label British de Genesis coopte enfin "Intimacy" qui sort en Angleterre. L'album a un succès certain chez nous mois faute de support, c'est un flop chez les anglais. Deux ans plus tard, en 84 parait ''Promises" sur Charisma. Première sortie mondiale et première aventure aux Etats-Unis. "Empire Days", le quatrième LP millésimé 85, énergétique en diable avec ses plages climatiques comme le vibrant "Five Minutes" ou l' enlètant "First Suspect" est sans doute le plus abouti.

Trois ans plus tard, Mark Long et Marcus Bell ressurgissent sur Manhattan/EMI sous le pseudo de SO. Leur single "Are You Sure" dans le top 30 des charts US, plébiscité par MTV qui en fait son clip of the week téléporte l'album dam les charts US. Le chanteur/guitariste et le bassiste/clavier reforment Opposition en 90 pour l'intimiste "Blue Alice Blue" enregistré dans le même esprit que le premier LP avec le fidèle Kenny Jones. Et cette année 94 voit la sortie du sixième épisode des aventures d'Opposition avec Ie CD "War Begins At Home" produit par e Marcus et mixé par l'incontournable Kenny. Avec son intro clin d'oeil aux Fab Four pour la légende, avec sa pop satiné façon new âge ascensionnelle et la fusion techno exotique de la fièvre raï de Khaled, Opposition a toute les couleurs d'un succès de très longue date mérite. Single évanescent, dont les séquences échoppent à l'attraction terrestre, "Hold Me Tonight" annonce le retour des années d'Opposition.
